Clinical Psychiatry and the Mind-Body Problem in Modern Medicine

Wednesday, 16 December 2020, 17.00-18.30, Online

Abstract: Starting with the mind-body problem posited by Descartes in the seventeenth century and continuing with the principles within randomized controlled trials experiments, medicine has placed the mind in a dichotomous relationship with the body. Taking into consideration more recent schools of thought like the bio-psycho-social model and the psycho-neuro-endocrino-immunology paradigm, medical professionals find themselves trapped within the confined borders of evidence-based medicine (medical research) which does not take into consideration the bidirectional relationship between mental processes and pathologies/diseases or even the concept of “health”. In a paradoxically opposite direction, stands practical medicine (clinical practice) which ought to see the patient holistically – biologically, psychologically and socially. The most visibly affected medical specialization is psychiatry where the mental status is invariably reflected upon the body. Therefore, we tackle the mind-body problem within modern medicine as it is presenting itself in clinical psychiatry. Moreover, we introduce the concept of medical humanities within medical education and their role in clinical practice as an important tool for a future paradigm shift in medicine. In the end, we transpose this standpoint at a larger scale, namely in all clinical practices, as a topic which ought to be addressed further.
