Between July 10 and August 15, 2023, in Sultana, in Călărași county, the sixth event in the ArchaeoSciences Summer Schools series, entitled “Experimental Introduction to Prehistoric Flint Knapping”, occurs.

The summer school was organized by the ArchaeoSciences Platform of the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB), within the interdisciplinary archaeological research project “The dynamics of the prehistoric communities located in the Mostiștea and Danube valleys”, in collaboration with the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel – CAU (Germany), the Bucharest City Museum, the “Lower Danube” Museum – Călărași and the “Gumelnița Civilization” Museum Oltenița (Romania), with the support of the Local Council of Mănăstirea – Călărași, as part of the Sultana School of Archeology initiative.

The summer school was dedicated to students, masters and doctoral students from the University of Bucharest (Romania), Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel – CAU (Germany), HoGent (Belgium), University of Leiden (Netherlands), University of York (Great Great Britain) and University South Florida (United States of America), present at the archaeological excavations within the project. Dr. Gabriel Popescu (ArchaeoSciences Platform, ICUB) ensured the coordination of the experimental activities.

During the ArchaeoSciences Summer School #6, in the kids section, a workshop on the processing and processing of prehistoric carved lithic tools was organized, which offered future archaeologists, but also their teachers, an original, archaeo-experimental perspective on how now thousands of years, our ancestors made their tools. This workshop was held within the activity A3.6. The development of programs intended for young people from schools and high schools focused on their involvement in scientific experiments within the project “Regional Center for Orientation and Counseling in the Research Career – Bucharest-Ilfov – from pre-university education to advanced research” (SciResCareer) project (contract no. 760032/23.05.2023), financed under PNRR/C9/Investment “I10 – Establishment and financial support of a national network of eight regional career guidance centres as part of ERA TALENT PLATFORM”.

The ArchaeoSciences Summer Schools series is a recent initiative dedicated to students, masters and doctoral students to conduct introductory courses related to current trends in interdisciplinary research of the past through the lens of methods specific to the field of ArchaeoSciences.
