Title: Investigating the Earth and Solar System using an integrated research infrastructure

Presents: Dr. Vlad C. Manea, Computational Geodynamics Laboratory, Geosciences Center, UNAM, Mexico; Research Institute of the University of Bucharest-iCUB, University of Bucharest, Romania

Abstract:

The seminar will share the experience gained by the presenter in the last two decades of tackling scientific discovery by using a multidisciplinary approach and exploiting an integrated/complementary scientific research infrastructure. The presentation will start with a short presentation (~10 minutes) of the past and present places which benefited from the research of the presenter, including the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Caltech, and University of Kobe. The presentation is structured in terms of scientific challenges and emphasizes the complementarity of various research infrastructures used to deal with scientific experiments. Then it will show some particular scientific breakthrough achievements and the strategy involved to attain these results. The presentation will be split in ~10 minutes blocks, tentatively each block will cover the following topics: the cause of abnormal volcanic zones on Earth, the origin of deep seismicity beneath Japan, the uniqueness of Mw 8.2 Mexico 2017 earthquake, and imaging rock microporosity using X-ray microtomography. If time permits, the presentation will also show some recent research achievements related to unraveling a rising salt diapir beneath Campina city (combining satellite imagery observations and numeric modeling) and computing numerically tidal heating of icy Moons: Enceladus, Europa and Titan.
