The 34th ArchaeoSciences Seminar

The Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB), in collaboration with the Bucharest Municipality Museum (MMB), is pleased to announce the is pleased to announce the 34th ArchaeoSciences Seminar.

These seminars are an original initiative of the ArchaeoScience#RO Platform at ICUB that aims to provide a setting for professionals in the Archaeological Sciences field from different parts of the world to share knowledge and transmit meaningful information about the latest issues regarding the current methods and approaches used to study the past. It is also a chance for Romanian students to learn more about the various interdisciplinary aspects of archaeology.

This seminar will take place on 5 July 2023 at 11:00 am (EET), and our guest speaker is Professor Wolfgang Rabbel from at Kiel University (Germany).

He will give a lecture entitled “Geophysical Prospecting in Archaeology”.

Wolfgang Rabbel is a Full Professor of Geophysics at Kiel University (Germany). He is the head of a working group of Applied Geophysics and one of the speakers of the ROOTS Cluster of Excellence on “Social, Environmental, and Cultural Connectivity in Past Societies“. The research of the working group is presently focused on developing prospection methods for the near-surface underground with a focus on archaeological and geoarchaeological targets, groundwater research and energy reservoirs. One major effort has been archaeological prospection in the land-sea-transition zone. Professor Rabbel is the main author or co-author of several monographs, co-edited volumes, studies, reports and articles.

The lecture will first give an overview of the geophysical prospecting methods used in archaeology. Case studies will then be used to explain the potential applications for investigating settlement structures to reconstruct landscapes. Examples will be given to demonstrate the situations in which the commonly applied magnetics fails and how the use of other methods can help in these cases. A certain focus will also be placed on seismic investigations.

This event will take place Wednesday, 5 July 2023, starting at 11:00 am (EET) at the „George Severeanu” Museum, part of the Bucharest Municipality Museum, in the Conference Room (Str. Henri Coandă, no. 26, Bucharest).

We look forward to exciting discussions!
