Varna and the Northwest Pontic Copper Age


The Division of ArchaeoSciences – the Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB) is pleased to announce the 13th ArchaeoSciences Seminar.

These seminars are an original initiative of our division that has the goal of providing a setting for professionals in the Archaeological Sciences field from different parts of the world, to share knowledge, and transmit meaningful information about the latest issues regarding the current methods and approaches used to study the past. It is also a chance for Romanian students to learn more about the various interdisciplinary aspects of archaeology.

This seminar will take place on 4 November 2020, online, and our guest speaker is dr. Vladimir Slavchev from Varna Regional History Museum (Bulgaria).

He will give an online presentation entitled “Varna and the Northwest Pontic Copper Age”.

Dr. Vladimir Slavchev studied Archaeology at Sofia University, and in 1997 started working as a specialist in the Department of Archaeology of the same university. Since December 2001 he is working at the Archaeology Department of the Varna Regional History Museum. His starting position was a curator. In 2005 he received PhD degree and was appointed in the museum as a research fellow in 2006. Since 2010 he is an assistant professor in the same institution.

Research interests of Vladimir Slavchev are mainly in the field of prehistory, particularly to the Copper Age of the Southeast Europe: Black Sea shore, Dobruja, and adjacent areas. He was a Private Assistant of Prehistory in Archaeology specialty at Sofia University in 1998-2001 and a Private Lecturer of Prehistory in Archaeology specialty of Shumen for 2014/2015 academic year. He was a guest lecturer at the Kazakh National University “Al-Farabi” (Almaty, Kazakhstan) in the academic year 2015/2016 and invited lecturer in universities in Germany, USA, Ukraine, Moldova, and Russia.

Moreover, Vladimir Slavchev is an author and co-author of more than 60 scientific papers and reports, co-author of one monograph, and author of two popular books.
