Time and date: 12 April, 14:00 Central Europe Time (one hour), jointly hosted by the University of Bucharest and the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence
Purpose of the webinar. While the role and performance of private rental housing is increasingly scrutinized by researchers, activists and policymakers in the Anglo-Saxon countries and the old EU states, little is known about its recent and quiet emergence in the postcommunist countries. This webinar questions what we (don’t) know and should know about this highly deregulated sector and debates its future.

14:00-14:30 – Short talks
- Dr Adriana Mihaela Soaita, University of Bucharest/Glasgow reflects on the significance of her new EU Horizon project “Understanding private tenants and landlords in postcommunist Romania’.
- Prof Alan Morris, University of Technology Sydney, reflects on what happens if a deregulated rental sector becomes larger and entrenched in a housing system where social renting is almost non-existent (Australia is a good example).
- Dr Jane Zavisca, University of Arizona, reflects on the implications of 'housing privatism' to people’s housing aspirations, family practices and the tenant/landlord relationship by drawing on her extensive research on Ukraine, Russia and other post-Soviet states.
- Claudio Acioly, architect and urban planner, member of the Council of the International Federation of Housing and Planning, reflects on the role of rental housing for low-income households around the Globe, from the Brazilian favelas to Albania’s emerging sector.
14:30-14:00 – Panel discussion
- Prof Alan Morris chairs the panel discussion framed by your questions. Are you an academic researching rental housing, a professional or activist involved in the field, a private tenant or landlord? Raise your questions or tell your vision for the likely role/future of rental housing in postcommunist countries.
